2016 School Recycling Challenge a Success
BRUNSWICK, GA (November 18, 2016) — With the goal of reducing waste, Keep Golden Isles Beautiful’s 2016 School Recycling Challenge did just that. This fall, fourteen local schools took part in the Challenge to collect non-traditional items for recycling. By collecting items not accepted in local curbside recycling programs, participating schools had an immediate and profound impact on reducing landfill waste. In just two short weeks, students collected over 86 pounds of oral care products, pens/markers/highlighters and cereal bags – all diverted from the landfill and now to be recycled via TerraCycle. At the recent awards ceremony held at Hello GoodBuy, first second and third place schools in each of the Challenge categories received a school recycling receptacle, an upcycled award and book marks for their entire student body. The Challenge was supported by a Hello GoodBuy community grant.
“Hurricane Matthew swept in during the Challenge and because of that we are especially excited about this year’s participation and collection numbers,” said Keep Golden Isles Beautiful executive director Lea King-Badyna. “We hope that the participating schools will continue collecting non-traditional items for recycling and continue this waste reduction stewardship effort.”
